Sookie Stackhouse is a bubbly blonde, and she mostly enjoys her job as a cocktail waitress at Merlotte's Bar in Bon Temps, Louisiana—especially now she's learned to screen her mind so she can't hear the clamour of people's thoughts all the time. Then the vampires 'came out', Sookie met Bill Compton—Vampire Bill—and discovered that she couldn't 'hear' a word he or any other vampires thought. And life in Bon Temps has never been the same since.
Turns out there's more interesting folks around than just the vamps—and some of them are her friends and family. It's not long before Sookie finds herself caught up in inter-species politics as the witches, vamps and werewolves all try to use her unique talents for their own good.
